Rameswaram, (also spelt as Ramesvaram, Rameshwaram) is a town and a second grade municipality in the Ramanathapuram district in the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is on Pamban Island separated from mainland India by the Pamban channel and is about 40 kilometres from Mannar Island, Sri Lanka. The temple was expanded during the 12th century by Pandya Dynasty, and its principal shrines sanctum were renovated by Jeyaveera Cinkaiariyan and his successor Gunaveera Cinkaiariyan of the Jaffna kingdom. The temple has the longest corridor among all Hindu temples in India. The temple is located in Rameswaram considered a holy pilgrimage site for Shaivites, Vaishnavites and Smarthas.
Dhanushkodi is located on the tip of Pamban Island separated by mainland by Palk strait and the distance from Rameshwaram to Dhanushkodi is around 20 km. It is just 29 km away from Talaimannar of Sri Lanka.
Ariyaman beach is located 27 km away from the city. It extends to a stretch of 2 km. Gentle waves, and the clean environment of this beach attracts lots of people, not only tourists and travelers, but also the Rameswaram, and Ramanathapuram locales.
Parasailing is a famous activity at this beach, which is done using a parachute and controlled by a moving boat. This beach also features children's park, watch tower and water-based attractions like wind surfing and water scooters. Tourists can also visit the aquarium and museum near the beach. Dormitories and cottages are available near this beach. Around 5000 people visit this Beach on weekends and on festival days.The temple is situated 12 km away from Rameshwaram. The walls of the temple have beautiful paintings inscribed on them. Athi Maram is one of the oldest trees located in the temple and there is a temple tank named after sage Bhringhi. This temple is surrounded by the Bay of Bengal Ocean. It is preferable to visit the temple in the early morning otherwise the temple gets crowded.

Water Bird Sanctuary of the Ramanathapuram District is one of the best places to visit for bird watchers. The Sanctuary is located 11 km away from Rameshwaram. This sanctuary features numerous water birds during north-east monsoon season between October to January. The sanctuary has both native as well as migratory birds that come here for feeding and breeding.
