4. Kovalam Beach
Kovalam has three beaches separated by rocky outcroppings in its 17 km coastline, the three together form the famous crescent of the Kovalam beach. Shallow waters stretching for hundreds of metres are ideal for swimming. The beaches have steep palm covered headlands and are lined with shops that offer all kinds of goods and services. The sands on the beaches in Kovalam are partially black in colour due to the presence of ilmenite and Monazite. The normal tourist season is from September to May. Ashoka beach is also the part of Kovalam beach.
5. Samudra Beach
Samudra Beach doesn't have tourists thronging there or hectic business. The local fishermen ply their trade on this part.Detour past Kovalam junction to land on Samudra Beach which is to the north of Ashoka Beach. One has the option to walk along the sea-wall too. The sight of the waves lashing on the rocks below is awesome. The northern part of the beach is known as Samudra Beach in tourism parlance.
6. Neyyar
Neyyar damis a gravity dam on the Neyyar River in Thiruvananthapuram district of Kerala, South India, located on the foot of the Western Ghats about 30 km from Thiruvananthapuram. It was established in 1958 and is a popular picnic spot. Lying against the southern low hills of the Western Ghats, Neyyar Dam has a scenic lake. Tourists can hire a speed boat for Rs 250 per head to view the surrounding forests.
7. Vellayani Lake
It is around 9 km away from the Thiruvananthapuram Central Bus Station at Thampanoor. It is at a distance of 7 km from Kovalam via Poonkulam junction. A road passes through this lake; a bund has been constructed for this purpose. This lake attracts a lot of tourists. Once in Kovalam, a visitor should not allow to miss the opportunity of seeing this wonder lake of freshwater. Its crystal-clear calm water, especially during moonlit nights, is a craze for the minds. The locals say a side of the lake is Kochu Kovalam, meaning tiny Kovalam.
There is a boat race in the lake during Onam which attracts a huge crowd. Country boat service is available from Kovalam beach to reach the lake.
8. Valiyathura Pier
The Valiyathura Pier is a 214 meter long pier located at the ancient port of Valiyathura and is another serene and relaxing beach location near Kovalam. The pier was used by fishermen during the high tide and is now a famous spot for angling and photography.
