The Munnar history began in the prehistoric, so prove the relics discovered around the area point of Stone Age civilization. A British lawyer and tea planter leased close to 600 sq. km of land around Munnar, which was then covered with thick jungle, from the Poonjar chief, a subordinate of the Maharaja of Travancore. He then cleared the jungle for Tea plantations. Then in 1983 James Finlay Group sold their remaining share holdings and the company became known as Tata Tea Ltd., the largest integrated tea company in the world. This land was later known as Kanan Devan (Kannan Thevar) Concession Land.

Popular Places in Munnar:


1. Mattupetty Dam:

The Mattupetty Dam is a very popular picnic spot and is visited by many tourists. 
In the vicinity of the dam is a beautiful lake where you can enjoy a serene boat ride on the calm waters. 

The Indo-Swiss Farm is an achievement in itself for the people of Munnar. It is a highly specialised farm where more than 100 varieties of high yielding cattle are reared. Visitors are allowed to enter only three of the eleven cattle sheds as the rest are off limits.

2.Attukal Waterfalls:

The fall looks like a glittering silver line from a distance but as you come closer, you will see water cascading from a towering height. The beauty of the waterfall is at its best during the monsoon season. Besides its natural splendour, the site is also ideal for trekking and hiking. If the water level is low, one can splash in the water pool formed at the bottom of this fall.

3.Pothamedu View Point:

This stunning location is perfect for tourists, who love to view the refreshing plantations of coffee, tea, and cardamom and feel the serenity of the place with their eyes and body drenched in the glory of lush green valleys. The place is located at a good height and one can feel this once they reach at the top and watch the cars and other vehicles approaching up through the winding road.

4.Eravikulam National Park:

The Eravikulam National Park is a home to the rare Nilgiri Tahr. The National Park houses a large variety of flora and fauna. Moreover, the beauty of the park is unparalleled. You can spend a day at the park exploring the myriad colours of nature and basking in the beauty that surrounds the park.  Visiting Hours: 7 AM To 6 PM (Daily), Closed for 45-60 days from 1st February during the calving season.

5.Anamudi Peak:

Anamudi, along with the national park, is inhabited by the largest surviving population of Nilgiri Tahr, Gaur and Asian Elephant. Visitors can undertake trek to reach the top of the mountain. A favourate  haunt among wildlife lovers, adventure enthusiasts and photo fanatics, the peak is one of the most visited tourist attractions in Munnar.

6. Top Station:

Owing to its strategic location, on the borders of Kerala and Tamil Nadu, the site offers a panoramic view of the splendid Western Ghats. The town of Munnar, replete with verdant forests, rolling hills as well as tea, coffee and spice plantations, appears as a green carpet from this view point. It is mostly clad with mist, but when the atmosphere is clear, visitors can even see some parts of the district of Madurai of Tamil Nadu from Munnar. The ideal time to visit Top Station is during the months of November to May.

7.Lakkam Waterfalls:

Lakkam Waterfalls is a very popular tourist attraction which witnesses visitors year-round. Lying on the way to Marayoor from Munnar, the waterfall is set amidst dense flora and rolling hills. It majestically cascades down from the rocky cliffs of the splendid Eravikulam Plateau (7300 feet above mean sea level). The serene setting combined with the company of your loved ones would ensure a memorable trip to this waterfalls.

8. Echo Point:

Echo Point is located around 18 km away from Munnar, on the way to the Top Station – the highest point in Munnar. This picturesque spot earns its name because of the natural echo that one can hear resonating in the undulating hills. The panoramic view of mist clad hills and pleasing mountain breeze make this place worth visiting. It is a popular picnic spot where one can enjoy a stroll while admiring the green surroundings. The adventurous can also opt for trekking up the mountains.
